DIVING IN GREENLAND
WHEN TO SEE WHAT
WHEN TO GO
All year round there is plenty to see while visiting Greenland - under and over water
All year :
All things you see in the web gallery at www.arcticdive.dk under "biology" can be seen all year round. Seals, Greenlandic whale, Belugas, Lesser Rorqual. These whales are present year round, but it takes luck to see them. Biggest chance is October to May. Many birds year round.
April - mid May
Lots of ice, The icebergs are right outside the port of Sisimiut and we can make ice diving in the sea. Ice diving on a wreck, pulling equipment over the ice on a sled is an option depending on the condition of the ice. Many fish go too deep for SCUBA diving, but visibility under water is at it's best: up to 40 meters. Going from Sisimiut to
Ilulissat by boat is not always possible because of ice, but the ice fiord can be visited by plane. Water temperature down to -1,8°C. It is likely to encounter humpback whales.
Winter sport activities like dog-sledding are possible
Mid May - June
Free passage by boat from Sisimiut to Ilulissat. Diving under the ice is not possible, but all fish come back to Scuba depths, and there are lots of icebergs in Disco Bay. It is very likely to encounter humpback whales.
Still good visibility.
July and August
Summertime. Greenland is blooming on land small plants and flowers take advantage of the 24 hour sunlight adds colour to the landscape. In Ilulissat there is a strong contrast between the icebergs and the green slopes.Visibility gets poorer underwater, but you still have up to 20 meters at the best of places and a rich fish life. Water temperatures around
6°Cand locally up to 12°C in the fjords. Humpback whales are present in great numbers. But no guarantee.
In the area around Kangerlussuaq there is a very good chance to see Musk oxes.
September - Mid October
Rich fish life. Snow starts falling and the weather is a bit more unstable. Visibility up to 25 meters. The temperatures starts to drop. It is very likely to encounter humpback whales.
Mid October - April
No diving, but lots of Winter activities!
